Exceptional and highly versatile DS-85 sofa and fold-out daybed by De Sede, preserved in remarkably beautiful original black leather and offering outstanding comfort.

This exceptional DS-85 was produced by De Sede in Switzerland during the 1970s, a period in which the manufacturer became internationally celebrated for combining extraordinary leather craftsmanship with innovative and highly functional furniture design. With its low architectural profile, deeply channelled upholstery and exposed chromed steel support, the DS-85 is a particularly distinctive expression of this philosophy.

Designed to function as both a generously proportioned sofa and a convertible daybed, the DS-85 combines sculptural presence with remarkable versatility. The upholstered backrest can be repositioned and the seating platform unfolds to create a substantially larger sleeping surface. When closed, it remains an exceptionally comfortable and inviting sofa, with a deep seat and generously padded construction that provides the relaxed comfort for which vintage De Sede furniture is renowned.

The sofa remains upholstered in its beautiful original black leather, which is exceptionally well preserved. Decades of gentle use have given the leather a subtle and highly attractive natural patina while retaining its softness, suppleness and rich appearance. The black leather contrasts beautifully with the exposed chromed steel structure at the rear, adding a distinctly architectural element to the otherwise soft and generous form.

Original De Sede provenance is further documented by the original textile underneath the upholstered elements, repeatedly woven with the “de Sede exclusiv” manufacturer’s marking. The daybed was acquired together with a matching pair of DS-85 lounge chairs in the same original black leather. These two matching lounge chairs are also available separately, presenting the rare opportunity to acquire the complete three-piece DS-85 seating group.

Condition

Exceptional original vintage condition. The original black leather remains remarkably soft, supple and beautifully preserved, with only a subtle natural patina consistent with age and careful use. There is no cracking, dryness, tearing or crazing to the leather, and no repairs are present. The upholstery retains its generous shape and comfort, while the chromed structure presents beautifully. A particularly well-preserved and correct example of the DS-85.
