RARE EARLY YOKO LOUNGE CHAIR IN ORIGINAL HEAVY-GRAINED BLACK LEATHER

An exceptionally rare Yoko lounge chair by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, produced in December 1986 and preserved in its complete original configuration.

Designed by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset in 1985, the Yoko belongs to the final chapter of Ducaroy’s remarkable career with the French manufacturer. Ligne Roset itself dates the introduction of the model to 1985, shortly before Ducaroy retired in 1986 after 26 years with the company. Ligne Roset

This example was produced in December 1986, as indicated by its original sewn-in production marking 12/86. It remains completely original, retaining its original black leather upholstery, original foam and original underlining.

The exceptionally thick black leather is what gives this particular Yoko its remarkable presence. Its pronounced, coarse natural grain emphasises the deep folds and sculptural tension of Ducaroy’s design. Combined with the low, broad proportions of the Yoko, the black leather gives the chair an especially strong, masculine and almost architectural character.

Despite its relaxed appearance, the original foam remains remarkably firm and tight, allowing the chair to retain its distinctive sculptural silhouette almost four decades after production. Original examples of the Yoko are increasingly difficult to find, particularly as a 1-seater in black leather and in such complete original condition.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition. Completely original, retaining the original thick black leather, original foam and original underlining. The foam remains exceptionally firm and well-shaped. The leather is thick, supple and beautifully textured, showing the natural character expected from an original 1986 example. In selected areas showing normal surface wear from use, the black colour has been professionally refreshed to restore a more even appearance while preserving the original leather. No tears.
