Iconic Dutch lounge chair by Gerard van den Berg for Montis, newly upholstered in an exceptional striped textile by Dieter Vander Velpen.

The Rock is one of the most distinctive lounge chair designs by Dutch designer Gerard van den Berg for Montis. Designed in the Netherlands during the 1970s, the chair is defined by its exceptionally high backrest, low seating position and sculptural, almost monolithic silhouette.

This original Montis example has been completely reupholstered in a striking textile by Belgian architect and interior designer Dieter Vander Velpen. The diagonal composition of chocolate brown, warm rust and cream stripes interacts beautifully with the curved shape of the chair, emphasizing its architectural lines from every angle. The combination gives this vintage Dutch design a unique and highly contemporary character.

The chair originally retained its Montis manufacturer's label prior to reupholstery, confirming its production by Montis. During the restoration, the previous leather upholstery was removed and consequently the original label could no longer be retained. The chair itself remains an authentic vintage Montis production designed by Gerard van den Berg.

A particularly expressive example of 1970s Dutch design, combining the unmistakable form of Gerard van den Berg with a sophisticated contemporary textile. The result is a unique statement piece suitable for both collectible design interiors and contemporary residential or hospitality projects.

Condition

Excellent condition. Professionally and completely reupholstered in a new Dieter Vander Velpen textile. The upholstery is unused since restoration and presents beautifully throughout. The original Montis label was present on the previous leather upholstery but was lost during the reupholstery process.
