SuperOBLONG - Jasper Morrison - Cappellini
Superoblong Chair by Jasper Morrison for Cappellini
Black Leather Lounge Chair with Oversized Cubic Armrests
Originally designed by Jasper Morrison in 2004 and commissioned by a Melbourne based architecture firm, the Superoblong is a masterclass in understated luxury and architectural comfort. True to Morrison's celebrated design philosophy, the chair transforms simple geometric volumes into a remarkably inviting object, proving that the most sophisticated designs are often the most restrained.
At first glance, the Superoblong appears almost monolithic. Large upholstered blocks define its silhouette, creating a powerful architectural presence while maintaining an effortlessly relaxed character. The generous cubic armrests, low profile and broad proportions give the piece an unmistakable loft like appeal, equally suited to contemporary penthouses, gallery spaces and refined modern interiors.
Wrapped entirely in supple black leather, the chair embraces a deliberately casual aesthetic. The upholstery softly drapes over the underlying structure, creating subtle folds and natural shadows that enhance its relaxed, lived in appearance. This balance between precise geometry and soft comfort is what makes the design so compelling. It feels substantial without being heavy, sculptural without being formal.
The proportions are exceptional. Broad, low and generously scaled, the Superoblong offers the comfort of a small sofa while maintaining the intimacy of an armchair. Its wide seat, deep lounging position and oversized armrests create a cocooning experience that naturally invites reading, conversation, reflection or simply doing absolutely nothing. Few contemporary lounge chairs communicate relaxation with such confidence and simplicity.
More than 20 years after its introduction, the Superoblong remains one of Jasper Morrison's most successful explorations of comfort, proportion and restraint. Equally at home in minimalist, architectural and high end interiors, it is a piece that makes a statement not through excess, but through perfect balance. A rare example of contemporary design that feels both timeless and deeply inviting.
