Original Orange Leather Cushions in a Piano Black Lacquered Architectural Frame

The Saratoga armchair, designed by Lella and Massimo Vignelli for Poltronova in 1964, is one of the most architectural lounge chairs in Italian design history. Rather than behaving like a traditional armchair, the Saratoga presents itself as a strict geometric volume, a black lacquered structure that almost feels like a piece of miniature architecture.

This early vintage example has a particularly beautiful contrast between the flawless, almost monolithic piano black frame and the warmth of the original orange leather cushions. Over time, the leather has developed a wonderful wabi sabi patina, with natural fading, tonal depth and visible traces of age. What was once a bright orange has softened into a richer, warmer shade, giving the piece a unique visual tension between precision and imperfection.

The chair remains fully original, including the leather, foam, lacquered wooden structure and internal support system. The leather shows visible signs of use, consistent with age, while the piano black lacquered frame has normal surface scratches and a few very small lacquer imperfections. These are minimal and do not disturb the overall presence of the piece.

A true statement chair and a perfect eye catcher for a refined interior. The Saratoga does not simply sit in a room, it defines the room. With its sculptural presence, original materials and beautifully aged leather, this example captures exactly why vintage collectible design can carry a depth and character that a new production piece never can.
