COMPACT FREESTANDING MOP BOOKCASE IN LAMINATED MIXED WOODS

An exceptional compact example of the iconic MOP modular bookcase, designed by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Molteni in 1974.

Designed around the idea of transforming different woods into a highly graphic architectural structure, MOP is composed of alternating strips of contrasting timber. The resulting rhythm of light and dark woods gives every element its own individual character, while revealing the construction itself as an essential part of the design.

This particularly attractive compact configuration measures only 104 cm wide and 96 cm high, giving it a sculptural presence without the scale of the larger MOP installations. Completely freestanding and visually open from both sides, it can be used as a low bookcase, display unit or room divider.

A particularly beautiful feature of this example is the exposed laminated construction at the ends of the vertical supports. Rather than being visually interrupted by the separate wooden end caps seen on some MOP examples, the alternating woods remain visible all the way through, emphasizing the continuous striped composition. MOP was conceived as a modular system, allowing different compositions and dimensions to be created from its characteristic shelf and support elements. This compact three-shelf configuration makes the design exceptionally versatile for contemporary interiors.

Condition

Good original vintage condition with a beautiful natural patina. The wood shows normal signs of age and use, including minor surface scratches and localized traces around the joints. Small areas have received minor, sympathetic cosmetic attention over time, including discreet filling to some imperfections in the wood. A small opening in one laminated joint is present, consistent with age and construction. Overall, the piece presents beautifully and retains its authentic vintage character.
