SZ 01 Armchair - Martin Visser - SPECTRUM

SZ 01 Fauteuil by Martin Visser for ‘t Spectrum, 1960
Rattan Woven Lounge Chair on a Brushed Steel Frame

Designed in 1960 by Dutch functionalist Martin Visser, the SZ 01 chair is a landmark in the lineage of minimalist European lounge seating. Its clarity of structure, sober use of materials, and sharp silhouette place it in the aesthetic tradition of both Marcel Breuer and Poul Kjærholm—two of Visser’s key influences. This version, the SZ 01, is the most natural and organic variant in the SZ series, alongside the leather SZ 02 and upholstered SZ 03.

The chair features a sleek, architectural frame in brushed steel, providing visual contrast to the warm, woven pit cane seat and backrest. The pit rattan is handwoven by skilled artisans. Each chair contains up to 320 meters of pit cane, making every piece a true celebration of human craftsmanship and material purity.

The SZ 01’s open, geometric construction offers both optical lightness and ergonomic comfort. As pit cane naturally ages, it develops soft tonal variations and gains a beautiful honey-gold patina, enhancing the character of the weave. The armrests are finished with matching rattan winding for an added tactile dimension.

A quintessential example of mid-century Dutch design, this chair is ideal for Japandi, minimal, and Ibizan interiors, adding texture without visual clutter. Its mix of industrial precision and organic materials makes it a conversation piece in any serene space.
