An exceptional Marenco three-seater sofa by Mario Marenco for Arflex, upholstered in extraordinarily thick, buttery-soft natural leather. Acquired from Arflex in Milan in 2006 by its first and only previous owner, this remarkable example celebrates the unique beauty of leather that has been allowed to age naturally, developing a rich and deeply individual patina over two decades.

Originally designed by Mario Marenco in 1970, the Marenco sofa remains one of the most recognisable expressions of Italian modernist design. Its generous proportions, distinctive oversized cushions and sculptural silhouette combine architectural simplicity with exceptional comfort. This particular three-seater retains the unmistakable character of the original design, with its relaxed, inviting appearance and beautifully balanced proportions.

What makes this example particularly special is its exceptionally thick, supple natural leather, free from conventional protective surface coatings. Such upholstery is exceptionally rare to encounter on the secondary market, particularly on an original Arflex sofa with a documented first-owner history. Unlike heavily treated or pigmented leather, natural aniline leather develops its own unique appearance through everyday use, gradually acquiring deeper tones, subtle variations and an increasingly expressive patina. The tactile quality is equally remarkable: exceptionally soft, substantial and wonderfully inviting.

After twenty years, this sofa has reached a particularly beautiful intermediate stage in its natural ageing process. The original warm cognac colour has evolved into a captivating spectrum of honey, caramel and deeper amber tones, accompanied by authentic traces of use, darker areas and natural variations in colour. Far from diminishing its appeal, these characteristics are precisely what make this example so distinctive. Its patina will continue to evolve over the coming years, with the potential to develop even richer and darker tones depending on use, light exposure and care. Much like highly sought-after vintage Cassina CAB chairs upholstered in natural leather, the attraction lies in the individuality and ongoing transformation of the material.

Beyond its extraordinary leather, the sofa remains exceptionally comfortable. The original cushions and internal fillings are in excellent condition, retaining their generous volume, resilience and supportive seating comfort. Another particularly interesting feature is the remarkable versatility of the armrests. Both armrests are fully interchangeable and can be positioned on either the left or right side of the sofa. They can also be rotated, allowing the naturally developed darker areas of the leather to face either inwards or outwards. This flexibility gives the owner complete freedom to arrange the armrests according to personal preference, the surrounding interior, or the desired presentation of the leather’s unique patina.

Condition

Good original vintage condition, with pronounced and beautifully developed natural leather patina consistent with twenty years of use. The exceptionally thick, soft leather displays visible colour variations, darker areas, stains, surface marks and natural creasing. One armrest shows more pronounced darkening from contact and use. These characteristics are part of the sofa's authentic ageing process and contribute significantly to its unique appearance.

The original cushions and fillings remain in excellent condition, offering outstanding comfort and support. The upholstery retains its supple character, with no obvious tears visible in the photographed areas. The sofa retains its original Arflex label.

The natural, unprotected leather will continue to develop its individual patina over time. As with all open-pore leather, further marks, darkening and colour variations may occur through use.
