Rare Kenzo Takada upholstered composition with original two-part architectural platform in matte bronze patina finish.
Originally designed by Hans Hopfer for Roche Bobois in 1971, the Mah Jong became one of the most recognizable modular seating systems of the twentieth century. Conceived as an informal, floor-level landscape of cushions, the design allowed complete freedom in composition and radically changed the way upholstered seating could inhabit an interior.
This exceptional version belongs to the 50th Anniversary era of the Mah Jong, when Roche Bobois reinterpreted Hopfer’s iconic design with elevated architectural platforms and couture textile collections by leading fashion designers. The present composition is upholstered in richly patterned Kenzo Takada fabrics, combining warm earthy tones, deep greens, graphic motifs and exotic botanical influences. Original Kenzo Takada / Roche Bobois labels are present.
A particularly desirable feature is the original architectural platform, finished in Roche Bobois’ matte bronze patina lacquer. The platform consists of two separate sections, allowing the composition to be displayed as one large continuous sofa landscape or divided into two independent arrangements. This flexibility is entirely in keeping with the modular philosophy of the original Mah Jong design and makes the set especially versatile for large residential interiors, lofts, hospitality spaces or collector environments.
The composition consists of three seat cushions and three upholstered back elements, including one adjustable backrest. Together, the sculptural cushions, expressive Kenzo Takada textiles and bronze-toned architectural platform give this version a luxurious and highly distinctive presence.
Condition
Very good overall condition. The upholstery presents beautifully and retains strong, vibrant colours. One corner at the rear side of the platform has been lightly touched up with matching lacquer following minor surface damage. As this is located at the back of the platform, the intervention is discreet and barely noticeable when the composition is installed. The platform otherwise shows only minor signs of use consistent with age and careful ownership. Please refer to the detailed photographs for a complete impression of the condition.
