Mah Jong ‘Jean Paul Gaultier’ - Hans Hopfer - Roche Bobois

Roche Bobois Mah Jong XL Modular Sofa by Hans Hopfer, upholstered in Jean Paul Gaultier fabrics – 1971 Design Icon
Exclusive XL modular sofa, upholstered in iconic Jean Paul Gaultier couture fabrics for Roche Bobois.

This rare XL edition of the Mah Jong sofa – originally designed by Hans Hopfer in 1971 – is a true collector’s piece. The collaboration between Jean Paul Gaultier and Roche Bobois brought haute couture into the living room, resulting in a vibrant and theatrical reinterpretation of the modular classic. Comprising 22 individual elements, including adjustable backrests on the lounge chairs, this set offers endless flexibility to configure sculptural seating landscapes tailored to any space.

The sofa is upholstered in some of Gaultier’s most recognizable couture fabrics, each telling its own story:

  • Tatouage – Japanese tattoo-inspired motifs with koi, waves and dragons

  • Marinière – the classic French sailor stripe with red buttons and Gaultier signature

  • Billet Doux – engraving-style banknote pattern with Gaultier insignia

  • Dentelle – lace print over vibrant orange grounds

  • Ikebana / Bouquet – floral collages and cherubs

  • Graffiti / Car Crash – trompe-l’œil collages of rusted metal and urban textures

Condition
Overall in a very good condition. Some cushions show light discoloration consistent with age and use. One cushion has two small repairs on the underside, not visible during use, as the cushions can be freely rotated in all directions. The set remains sturdy, comfortable and ready for everyday use, while retaining its exceptional collectible value.

Design Significance
The Mah Jong is considered one of Roche Bobois’ most iconic designs, often used as a canvas for collaborations with fashion houses such as Missoni, Kenzo and Jean Paul Gaultier. This super rare XL ensemble in Jean Paul Gaultier fabrics is almost never offered on the secondary market. A dramatic and playful design statement, equally at home in eclectic, bohemian, maximalist or contemporary interiors.
