Mah Jong 50 Year - Hans Hopfer - Roche Bobois

Roche Bobois Mah Jong by Hans Hopfer 50 Year Anniversary Platform Edition (2021)
Kenzo Takada Edition on Asymmetrical Architectural Platform Base

Designed in 1971 by Hans Hopfer, the Mah Jong became one of the most radical seating concepts of the twentieth century. Created as a modular system celebrating freedom of form and function, it allowed endless configurations from lounge to chaise to bed. In its 50 year anniversary presentation, Roche Bobois elevated this icon further by introducing couture fabrics and refined platform bases that strengthen both line and comfort.

This example features Kenzo Takada upholstery and rests on a rare architectural wooden platform with a brushed bronze appearance. The base is asymmetrical, a subtle but powerful design gesture that transforms the Mah Jong from relaxed floor seating into a sculptural interior statement. The platform enhances proportion, increases visual tension and gives the piece a gallery like presence.

The combination of textured corduroy and Kenzo’s refined textile creates a layered aesthetic that balances 1970s spirit with contemporary couture influence. Seat height is elevated for increased comfort while maintaining the low lounge character that defines the model. Seat depth of 60 cm ensures generous relaxation.
