EXCEPTIONALLY RARE BURNT ORANGE LEATHER – MATCHING 1990s PAIR

An exceptionally rare matching pair of original LC2 armchairs by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand for Cassina, executed in a striking burnt orange leather.

Designed in 1928, the LC2 – Fauteuil Grand Confort, Petit Modèle – became one of the defining icons of twentieth-century modernism. Its architecture remains instantly recognizable: generous independent cushions contained within an exposed tubular steel structure, deliberately separating the supporting frame from the upholstered elements. Cassina has produced the model since 1965 as part of its iMaestri collection.

What makes this particular pair truly exceptional is the colour. Rather than the black, brown, cognac, beige or white leather more commonly associated with vintage LC2 examples, these chairs are upholstered in an intense original burnt orange leather. Vintage examples in this specific colour are remarkably difficult to encounter, giving the pair an entirely different visual presence. Saturated, warm and unapologetically colourful, the orange transforms the architectural LC2 into a genuine statement piece and feels particularly relevant within today's renewed appreciation for colour in contemporary interiors.

The pair is also particularly appealing from a collector's perspective. Both chairs retain their individual Cassina markings, LC2 designation, Le Corbusier signature and production numbers. The two production numbers are only 559 units apart, supporting their presentation as a closely numbered matching pair from the same production period. The original Cassina-branded components and elastic support webbing also remain present beneath the cushions.

The condition is exceptionally good for a vintage set. The original leather is remarkably thick, soft and supple, without dryness or craquelure. Only localized surface wear is visible on the upper ends of the armrests – precisely the areas naturally touched by hands during use – resulting in an honest and attractive patina rather than general deterioration. The foam and original elastic support webbing remain in very good condition, preserving the comfort for which the LC2 is known. The polished chrome-plated tubular frames are likewise beautifully preserved with only minor age-related traces.

Beyond its rarity, this is simply an exceptionally striking pair. The combination of polished chrome and saturated burnt orange gives the LC2 a warmer and more expressive character than the more frequently encountered neutral versions. Comfortable enough for everyday use yet visually powerful enough to anchor an interior, the pair works particularly well as an architectural focal point or colourful statement within a contemporary setting.

Condition

The pair is presented in exceptionally good original vintage condition. The thick original leather remains very soft and supple, without cracking, craquelure or dryness. Localized age-related surface wear is visible mainly at the upper ends of the armrests where hands naturally rest. The cushions, foam and original elastic support webbing remain in very good condition. The chrome-plated tubular steel frames are beautifully preserved with only minor traces consistent with age and careful use.
