An exceptional matching pair of the iconic LC2 armchairs, produced by Cassina in the late 1990s and preserved in beautifully supple dark brown leather.

Originally designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, the LC2 remains one of the defining pieces of twentieth-century modernist furniture. Its architecture is unmistakable: generous loose cushions held within an exposed tubular steel structure, deliberately separating the supporting frame from the upholstered volumes. Cassina describes this distinction between structure and cushions as fundamental to the Rationalist principles behind the design.

What makes this particular pair especially appealing today is its deep dark brown leather. Brown has returned as one of the defining tones across contemporary fashion and interiors, giving these chairs a warmer and more sophisticated presence than the more commonly encountered black versions. Combined with the polished chrome frame, the colour feels remarkably current while retaining the unmistakable character of a genuine vintage Cassina production.

Equally important is the provenance of the pair. Both chairs retain their individually engraved Cassina markings and Le Corbusier signatures. Their production numbers are relatively close to one another, supporting their presentation as a matching pair from the same production period. Beneath the seats, the original Cassina-branded elastic webbing and Cassina metal identification clips remain present.

Rather than presenting like a new reproduction, these chairs have developed exactly the character one looks for in a vintage LC2. The leather remains remarkably soft and supple, while subtle traces of use and patina give the pair depth and individuality. It is precisely this balance between an iconic architectural form and naturally aged leather that distinguishes a vintage 1990s set from a newly produced example.

Condition

The pair is presented in very good original vintage condition. The dark brown leather remains exceptionally supple and healthy, without cracking, craquelure or dryness. Light age-related patina is visible, particularly along some of the piping and upper edges of the back cushions, where there is modest surface wear consistent with use and age. This wear is cosmetic and contributes to the authentic vintage character of the pair. The cushions remain comfortable and well-shaped, the chrome-plated frames present beautifully, and the chairs are structurally solid and ready for use.
