Kon Tiki Folding Chair - Gillis Lundgren - IKEA Sweden
Gillis Lundgren for Ikea rare leather folding lounge chair Kon Tiki from the seventies.
Collector grade leather upholstered folding lounge chair with pine frame and matching leather support sling
This exceptionally rare folding lounge chair by Gillis Lundgren for Ikea is one of the most sought after early designs from the seventies. Most Kon Tiki style models were produced with canvas or fabric upholstery, making the fully leather upholstered version seen here extremely scarce. Both the tufted cushions and the structural support sling are executed in original leather, giving the chair a richness and warmth not found in the standard editions.
The solid pine frame shows the characteristic sculptural geometry of Lundgren’s early work with its angled side members, rounded joints and relaxed low lounge profile. The chair folds completely flat in one single movement, a functional detail that adds to its pragmatic charm. The natural patina on the leather and the pine surface speaks to its age and authenticity while preserving a soft, inviting appearance.
With its organic materials, earthy palette and tactile surfaces, this chair fits seamlessly into contemporary boho and Ibiza inspired interiors, as well as Japandi and wabi sabi environments. Fully original and increasingly difficult to source, it stands as a true collector item from the golden era of early Ikea design.
