Kashima Sofa - Michel Ducaroy - Ligne Roset

Kashima Sofa by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, France, 1980
Rare Early Production in Original Textured Velour Fabric

An exceptionally well-preserved early Kashima sofa designed by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, manufactured in 1980 as confirmed by the original production stamp underneath the sofa. As one of Ducaroy's most celebrated lounge designs, the Kashima perfectly captures the relaxed elegance of French modernism, combining sculptural geometry with exceptional seating comfort.

This rare three-seater remains upholstered in its original textured velour fabric, a luxurious taupe-brown upholstery with an incredibly soft, almost suede-like feel. Compared to the more commonly encountered leather versions, original fabric examples from this period have become remarkably scarce, especially in such outstanding condition.

The distinctive quilted construction gives the Kashima its unmistakable architectural appearance. Every generously padded section creates a beautiful rhythm of light and shadow while maintaining the inviting softness that defines Michel Ducaroy's work. The warm earthy tone makes this sofa equally at home in contemporary interiors, quiet minimalist spaces or Mediterranean and Ibizian homes.

One of the greatest qualities of this particular example is its remarkable preservation. The original upholstery remains in exceptional vintage condition, showing virtually no visible wear. The fabric has retained its rich colour, soft texture and crisp appearance throughout.

Equally impressive is the condition of the original foam. Unlike many surviving examples, the foam has maintained its excellent density and shape, providing outstanding support while remaining wonderfully comfortable. The seating experience is exactly as Ducaroy intended: soft, supportive and deeply relaxing.

Manufactured entirely from foam, the Kashima offers a slightly more architectural interpretation of the famous Togo while preserving the same effortless lounge comfort. Its clean proportions and sculptural presence make it a true statement piece without overwhelming a space.

Authentic 1980 production examples, retaining their original fabric, original foam and exceptional condition, have become increasingly difficult to source. This makes the sofa not only a highly comfortable everyday piece but also a rare and increasingly collectible example of iconic French design.
