ITALIAN ARCHITECTURAL COFFEE TABLE — REMINISCENT OF GIANFRANCO FRATTINI’S KYOTO
An exceptionally graphic Italian coffee table from the 1970s, defined by an intricate wooden grid construction, sculptural rounded legs, cognac leather details and a floating clear glass top.
The architectural base is composed of precisely intersecting wooden slats, creating a rhythmic three-dimensional grid that becomes an integral part of the table’s visual identity. Seen through the transparent glass, the construction produces constantly changing geometric patterns, while the extended slats cast particularly striking shadows around the table.
Four substantial rounded wooden legs anchor the otherwise open construction. Each leg continues through the grid and terminates in a circular cognac leather pad supporting the glass top — a refined material detail that creates a beautiful contrast between warm wood, leather and transparent glass.
The design strongly recalls the celebrated Kyoto table designed by Gianfranco Frattini for master cabinetmaker Pierluigi Ghianda in 1974. Closely related tables have historically also been attributed on the vintage market to Frattini, Ghianda and Knoll. However, the construction and detailing differ from documented examples of the original Kyoto. In the absence of a manufacturer’s mark, we therefore prefer to present this example conservatively as an Italian 1970s design, while acknowledging its clear visual relationship to Frattini’s iconic Kyoto.
The square 76 × 76 cm proportions give this version a particularly balanced and architectural presence. At only 34.5 cm high, the table maintains a low, elegant profile that emphasizes the transparency of the glass and the sculptural quality of the wooden grid below. Both decorative and functional, it is an excellent example of the experimentation with geometry, transparency and craftsmanship that characterised progressive Italian furniture design during the 1970s.
Condition
In very good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with its age. The wooden construction presents beautifully. Minor wear is visible to the cognac leather pads, adding to the authentic vintage character. The clear glass top remains in good vintage condition.
