PAIR OF SCULPTURAL DUTCH LOUNGE CHAIRS IN NEW SOFT BLACK LEATHER
An exceptionally relaxed pair of 1970s easy chairs by Gerard van den Berg for Montis, defined by their deep, low seating position, softly draped leather and unmistakably laid-back character.
There is something wonderfully effortless about these chairs. Rather than forcing the upholstery into a rigid architectural shape, Van den Berg allowed the seat to remain loose, generous and inviting. The leather seems almost casually draped over the slender cantilever frame, creating broad armrests, a deep seat and an enveloping backrest that naturally adapts to the body. They are true easy chairs in every sense: low, lazy and exceptionally comfortable.
The pair has been professionally reupholstered in new, thick and beautifully soft black leather. Particular care was taken not to make the upholstery look overly tight or new. Instead, the natural suppleness of the hide was allowed to create the folds, wrinkles and generous volumes that belong to the design. It already has the relaxed character these chairs demand, while the leather will continue to soften and develop an increasingly beautiful patina through use.
The contrast between the substantial leather body and the minimal tubular metal cantilever frame gives the chairs their distinctive floating appearance. Viewed from the side or rear, the construction becomes particularly expressive: an almost weightless frame carrying a generous envelope of leather. The result is quintessential 1970s Dutch design—functional and understated, yet full of personality.
More than sculptural objects, these are chairs made for genuinely comfortable living. Their generous 95 cm width, deep seating position and soft leather invite you to sink in rather than simply sit down. A wonderfully informal and tactile design that feels equally at home in a refined contemporary interior as in a more relaxed, eclectic setting.
CONDITION
The chairs are in very good condition and have been professionally reupholstered in new, high-quality soft black leather. The leather is supple and intentionally allowed to drape naturally around the form, preserving the characteristic relaxed appearance of the design. The original metal frames show only minor signs of age and use. When acquired, both chairs retained their original Montis labels attached to the former grey fabric upholstery. As the chairs were subsequently reupholstered in leather, these fabric labels could not be retained on the finished pieces.
