ELDA chair - Joe Colombo - Italy

Joe Colombo – Elda Lounge Chair, Comfort Italy, Early Edition, 1963
Black Patinated Leather on a Rare Red Fiberglass Shell

The Elda Lounge Chair by Joe Colombo is one of the most iconic design pieces of the 1960s. As an early edition, this example combines radical Italian futurism with an extremely rare color combination seldom seen on the market. With its sculptural silhouette and monumental presence, the Elda is equally at home in a high-end mid-century interior or as a centerpiece within a contemporary art collection.

The deep seat and enveloping form provide unparalleled comfort, upholstered in supple black leather that has developed a rich natural patina over the years. Its bold red fiberglass shell creates a striking contrast, accentuating the chair’s fluid curves and giving it the quality of a functional sculpture. Hand-stitched details and generous proportions underline Colombo’s vision of luxury and future living.

Condition is consistent with age: the leather shows areas of craquelure, particularly on both armrests where the color has been refreshed. The rear shell displays a scratch of approximately 10 cm, visible in the detail photos. These authentic traces of use contribute to the unique character of this exceptionally rare piece.

The Elda is a true museum chair, permanently represented in leading design collections worldwide. In this configuration – black leather on a red fiberglass shell – it is among the rarest and most coveted variants for discerning collectors.
