Easy Chairs - Gerard van den Berg - Montis

Montis Cantilever Easy Chairs by Gerard van den Berg, 1970s
Supple Black Leather Draped over a Sleek Cantilevered Chrome Frame

Gerard van den Berg’s work for Montis defined a new era of Dutch casual modernism. These rare cantilever easy chairs embody his signature philosophy: comfort with character, informality elevated to design iconography. Their broad, low-slung form and relaxed presence make them perfect for both stylish living rooms and bold mancave interiors.

The design concept draws a clear lineage from Van den Berg’s legendary Chaplin Chair. Just as the Chaplin was conceived as a “leather jacket thrown over a frame”, these chairs achieve a similar nonchalant draped effect, black hide falling generously over a skeletal cantilever base. The result is a chair that feels as though it wears its upholstery like clothing: supple, loose, and inviting.

Crafted in the 1970s with hand-stitched black leather and a chromed steel cantilever sled, the chairs combine a raw masculine presence with an ease that invites lounging for hours. Their strong proportions and deep seating depth emphasize both attitude and comfort.

Condition is very good with an attractive patina to the leather, enhancing the relaxed aesthetic. This model is essentially unfindable on the secondary market, making this pair a unique opportunity for collectors of Van den Berg’s work and lovers of uncompromising 1970s Dutch design.
