Castell Sofa - Hans Hopfer - Wiener Werkstätte
Wiener Werkstätte “Castell” Modular Sectional Sofa by Hans Hopfer, Austria 1972
Original Soft Velvet Modular Lounge System in Warm Brown
A rare and highly expressive modular seating landscape designed by Hans Hopfer in 1972, at the height of the shift away from strict modernism towards softer, more playful living concepts. The Castell embodies this evolution perfectly, combining a strict, almost architectural grid with an inviting, informal lounge character. Its sculptural presence and low profile make it a true centerpiece within contemporary, eclectic, or 70s inspired interiors.
Hans Hopfer is internationally renowned for his iconic Mah Jong sofa for Roche Bobois, one of the most celebrated modular seating systems ever created. The Castell can be seen as part of this same design language, exploring freedom of composition, comfort and adaptability in a more structured, architectural form.
The design is composed of individual cubic elements that can be arranged freely, creating a dynamic, Tetris-like configuration. This flexibility allows for endless compositions, from compact seating arrangements to expansive lounge environments. The current setup is particularly strong, offering both visual rhythm and functional flow, making it stand out from more commonly seen configurations.
Upholstered in its fully original fabric, this piece is exceptionally well preserved. The rich brown tone and soft, velvety texture are entirely true to the period and enhance the tactile quality of the design. Unlike most examples on the market, which are often reupholstered, this sofa retains its authentic character, with no tears, damages, repairs, or visible wear. The foam remains in excellent condition, providing a deep, relaxed and highly comfortable seating experience.
As a design object, the Castell stands out for its unique balance between rational structure and sensory comfort. It is not merely a sofa but a modular living system, reflecting the spirit of 1970s design while remaining highly relevant today. Original examples in this condition and configuration are extremely rare, making this a highly collectible and distinctive piece.
