Brigantin Lounge Chair - Michel Ducaroy - Ligne Roset France
Rare Pair of Brigantin Lounge Chairs by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, 1981
More sculpture than seating — an exceptional matching pair of Michel Ducaroy’s Brigantin lounge chairs, preserved in their original cognac leather.
Introduced by Ligne Roset in 1981, the Brigantin belongs to Michel Ducaroy’s radical exploration of all-foam seating. Free from the visual constraints of a conventional furniture frame, its architecture is created through foam, leather and an extraordinary series of folds and gathered volumes. The result is one of Ducaroy’s most expressive designs: low, enveloping and unapologetically sculptural.
This matching pair is particularly striking. Although identical in design, the soft construction gives each chair its own posture and personality. Seen together, they become almost two individual sculptures — generous, relaxed and wonderfully nonchalant. Their warm cognac leather only reinforces the organic character of the design and gives the pair an incredible presence from every angle.
Remarkably, both chairs have been preserved in entirely original condition. The cognac leather, foam, stitching, piping, underside and Ligne Roset label are all original. The leather has developed a beautiful natural patina while retaining a wonderfully rich and remarkably even appearance. The original foam remains exceptionally well preserved, with excellent volume, resilience and support.
Despite their almost sculptural appearance, the Brigantin is exceptionally comfortable. The deep seat and enveloping all-foam construction allow the body to settle naturally into the chair, surrounded by Ducaroy’s characteristic soft folds. It is precisely this combination of radical form and genuine comfort that makes the design so compelling.
Finding a Brigantin is uncommon. Finding two matching examples in original cognac leather, with their original foam and in this level of preservation, is exceptional. A true statement pair for an interior — not simply two lounge chairs, but two extraordinary pieces of French design history.
