780 Nesting Tables – Gianfranco Frattini – Cassina, Italy

VINTAGE 1970s | ORIGINAL SET OF FOUR | DARK STAINED WOOD

An exceptional vintage set of four Model 780 nesting tables, designed by Gianfranco Frattini in 1966 for Cassina, Italy. A timeless example of Italian modernist design, combining architectural precision, sculptural simplicity and remarkable versatility.

Designed in 1966 by Gianfranco Frattini for Cassina, the Model 780 is one of the most recognisable examples of Italian modular furniture design. Conceived as a family of four circular tables in graduated sizes, the design explores the relationship between geometry, functionality and space. Each table features a distinctive circular frame supported by three elegantly curved wooden legs, creating a beautifully balanced architectural silhouette.

This particular set is an original vintage Cassina production, attributed to the 1970s and retaining its original Cassina manufacturer's label. Executed in richly toned dark-stained wood, the tables display a beautiful, warm patina that emphasises the natural grain and character of the material. Their understated yet highly distinctive construction reflects Frattini's exceptional understanding of proportion, craftsmanship and structural clarity.

One of the most appealing characteristics of the Model 780 is its remarkable versatility. The four tables can be arranged individually, grouped together in different compositions or nested neatly beneath one another to form a compact cylindrical unit. Their reversible tabletops feature off-white and black surfaces, allowing the appearance and arrangement of the tables to be adapted to different interiors. This interplay of colour, height and geometry makes the set as visually compelling as it is practical.

More than half a century after its introduction, the Model 780 remains part of Cassina's collection, a testament to the enduring relevance of Frattini's original design. Vintage examples such as this set offer the additional character of decades of natural ageing, preserving the authenticity and craftsmanship of an earlier period of Italian furniture production. Whether displayed as a sculptural group or distributed throughout an interior, these tables represent a refined expression of mid-century Italian design.

CONDITION
